Do you suffer from a wandering mind? Do you have trouble sitting down and getting something done? The mind functions so quickly that it’s very easy to get distracted. A noise or memory can cause us to completely forget what we’re doing and focus on something else.
The need to focus at certain times can be an issue for many of us as we find it difficult to put all our energy into a single thing for more than a few minutes. Thankfully, there are some methods we can use to make things easier that don’t require much effort.
Play Some Music
Many find that having background noise such as music actually helps them focus. When you try to devote all your energy to a single thing, your brain still has space for more. When that happens, you’ll start getting random memories or thoughts popping into your conscious mind.
Using music while working allows your brain to focus on more than one thing but devote ‘most’ of your attention on the work at hand, rather than the music.
Take Daydream Breaks
If you find yourself daydreaming while working, set a schedule for it. Work for thirty minutes then daydream for five minutes. Allowing your mind some time to focus on something else helps it to focus for longer periods of time.
Very few people are capable of focusing on a single task for more than half an hour which is why it is good to take a break every so often. You could even take a break every fifteen minutes if necessary. Having a cup of red tea to go with the break would taste great.
Avoid Any Stress Factors
The location in which you work is important. You shouldn’t have anything nearby that causes you stress. An example of this would be studying in your room. Psychologists suggest that you study elsewhere from where you sleep, such as the dining table.
You could even work outside if possible. Try to move around as best you can. If you work in a singular location every day, then that place will become a stressful location for you. (Hence why you shouldn’t work in your room)
Rebound Therapy
Rebound therapy means taking note of when your mind starts to wander and snapping back into focus immediately. If you learn to notice the signs of mind wandering, then you can develop a rebound habit where your mind automatically refocuses itself.
A habit like this takes about six weeks of conscious action before it becomes automatic, but it can significantly improve your work ethic in the future.
