The doctors of the University of Miami’s Diabetes Research Institute treated a patient suffering from high diabetes. They used a unique method of treatment. The doctors claim that the patient won’t need to take insulin injections anymore. They won’t need any kind of medication against diabetes. In the new diabetes treatment method, islet cells are injected inside the patient who suffers from Type 1 diabetes:
Wendy Peacock
Wendy Peacock is a 43 year old female. She suffered from Type 1 diabetes from the age of 17 to her forties. But now, she is the first patient that doesn’t need insulin anymore.
Wendy has been treating herself with daily insulin injections to control her diabetes. Insulin injections were the only means of controlling diabetes before this discovery.
Now at the age of 43, she made up her mind and agreed for the surgery. After the surgery, the doctors saw that her body was producing insulin by itself. That means she doesn’t need to treat herself with insulin anymore.
Now, she can eat any kind of food. The doctor removed her diet restrictions. Improper food and lifestyle causes most forms of diabetes.

Cause of Diabetes
The immune system causes diabetes. The main function of the immune system is to fight against viruses and bacteria present in our body.
In a diabetic, the immune system doesn’t attack those harmful viruses. Instead, it attacks the cells making insulin in our body. The attack on those cells results in less insulin in the body.
Islet cells are responsible for making insulin in our body. When the islet cells get damaged, the production of insulin stops as well.
Insulin is the main ingredient which is responsible for lowering the sugar level in our blood. The insulin separates the sugar from the blood and sends it to the cells for the metabolism process.
Huge amounts of sugar present in your blood can cause many types of problems. High blood sugar levels is a serious problem leading to sickness and loss of human life. So, it is important to treat blood sugar as soon as possible.
Islet Cell Injection Method
With this method, the doctors inject the islet cells in to the patient’s body. Instead of injecting it to the liver, they inject the cell into Omentum. Injecting the cells directly to the liver is also effective but it only works for a limited time period. Injecting the islet cells in Omentum removes all the problems related to diabetes.
Omentum is a body tissue located and wrapped around the organs in the abdominal area. The islet cells are being injected into the tissue with the help of biodegradable scaffolding. The patient’s blood is mixed with thrombin in order to produce scaffold. Scaffold is a substance used for controlling bleeding during surgery.
Thrombin, when mixed with the blood cells, forms a jelly-like substance. The substance sticks to Omentum and protects the injected islet cells from dying or rejection inside the body. The body absorbs the gel. The injected islet cells get the necessary oxygen and nutrients needed to work properly.
After some time, the islet cells start to produce insulin on their own. The blood sugar level in the body then starts to decrease with the increase in insulin levels.
Therapy
Along with this surgery, doctors apply a specific therapy on the body of the patient. The body becomes anti resistant and accepts the islet cells for a longer time period.
Dr. Camillo Ricordi, director of DRI and professor in University of Miami, says that it is not a cure. But it is a huge step towards curing those who are living their life with Type 1 diabetes. The patient, Wendy Peacock, is very happy with her new carefree life. She doesn’t need to follow a strict schedule of Type 1 diabetes ever again.
